Acland Street, St Kilda
An alliance between the City of Port Phillip, Public Transport Victoria and Yarra Trams resulted in an urban streetscape redevelopment, transforming the look and feel of the popular Acland Street precinct in St Kilda, Melbourne.
Bamstone Bluestone and Anston Architectural were engaged to create custom paving and furniture products for the streetscape upgrade. Both paving and furniture needed to be aesthetically pleasing, extremely durable and complementary to council regulations for MPA, slip resistance and DDA compliance.
The design team at BKK Architects and McGregor Coxall proposed a bold and vibrant pattern of large Australian bluestone circles interspersed with custom precast concrete keystones. Complementary to the already existing strong and vibrant identity of St Kilda, the new design language blurs the boundaries between street and infrastructure, maintaining the streets unique personality, while being robust enough to accommodate the new tram terminus, flexible plaza space and public furniture.
